OUTDOOR PLAY IN DANGER OF DISAPPEARING

A research from «Savlon» and «Play England» reveals that unlike their parents, today’s children are no longer spending their time playing outdoors.

Many of parent’s fondest childhood memories are of playing outside, however, outdoor activities that for parents were part of growing up seem to be in danger of disappearing among new generations.

This trend does not only exist in Spain, but is still widespread in developed countries. Thus, in England, Play England organization conducted with Savlon a research focused on the playing habits of British children, surveying both parents and sons. Research has revealed an important fact: a reported 60% of parents wish their children could play outside in natural places more than they do nowadays.

Moreover, the research reveals that it is a myth that children prefer indoor based play activities such as computer games, with the majority actually preferring to play outside: playing at a beach or river (88%), playing in a park (79%) riding a bike (77%) and playing ball games (76%) are overwhelmingly more popular with children than playing computer games.

It is important to overcome the barriers to outdoor play by addressing parents’ safety concerns, providing them solutions both fun and safe for parents and children, so they can have the opportunity to play in the fresh air enjoying together the nature and the environment around them.
